What we Know so Far About the Upcoming 2025 Mazda CX-70

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 is on the verge of being unveiled, but until then, here is a look at what we know about this model which should fill a void in the brand’s lineup following its arrival on the market later this year.

It will use the same powertrains as the CX-90

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 will be equipped with the same powertrains as the current CX-90, which means it will benefit from two of the most advanced powertrains ever offered by Mazda in North America. Starting with the base model, the CX-70 will be powered by a 3.3L turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine fitted with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. In the CX-90, this engine produces 280 horsepower in the entry-level version and up to 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque in upper trim levels. We can expect to see similar numbers when it comes to the future CX-70.

In the case of the plug-in hybrid version, the CX-70 will use a 2.5L Skyactiv four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and a high-voltage battery. This combination makes for an output of 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque in the CX-90, and here again, we believe the CX-70 will be similar. An area that will likely be different is the electric range, which should be higher than the 42 kilometres offered by the CX-90 PHEV thanks to the new model’s expected smaller size.

It will have Five seats and a smaller footprint

Speaking of size, the 2025 Mazda CX-70 is likely to be smaller than the CX-90 and it should offer only five seats instead of the six to eight that can be found in the larger SUV. This means that the CX-70 will be positioned in a market segment that isn’t currently occupied by Mazda: mid-size two-row SUVs. This category of vehicles is popular with drivers who want a spacious vehicle that is comfortable and practical, but don’t really have a need to transport more than two or three passengers, such as small families, for example.

Adding the CX-70 to its SUV lineup will help Mazda offer a more complete lineup that will have something to offer every buyer, all the way from the subcompact CX-30 to the midsize, three-row CX-90.

It should have a similar level of luxury and equipment

While we still don’t know exactly what the CX-70 will look like both in terms of design and equipment, we can expect it to be very similar to the CX-90 in many ways. For example, the main visual differences between the CX-70 and the CX-90 could be limited to the length of the body and the lack of a third-row of seats. This means the CX-70 should be one of the most premium-looking SUVs in its category, yet another step in Mazda’s move toward the upper end of the mass-market segment. The same should be true for the interior of the CX-70, which could benefit from the same luxurious appointments as the CX-90, including Nappa leather and genuine wood accents in the Signature trim level.
