Cutting Fuel Stops on Long Summer Drives With the 2026 Mazda CX-70 PHEV

Summer road trips in New Brunswick often mean hours on the highway before you see the next gas station. If you’re planning drives to cottage country or coastal towns this season, the fuel-stop math matters as much as the scenery.

The 2026 Mazda CX-70 PHEV is built with that math in mind. Its plug-in hybrid system is designed to stretch electric-only driving as far as possible before the gasoline engine steps in, which changes how often you need to pull off the highway.

Why Fewer Fuel Stops Matter on Long Summer Drives

A long weekend drive is easier when you’re not tracking down gas stations along the way. Every stop adds time, and rural stretches don’t always have a station exactly when you need one.

A plug-in hybrid changes that equation by covering a portion of the trip, or all of a shorter one, on electric power alone. The gasoline engine only joins in once the battery is depleted or the driver asks for more power, so the fuel tank gets used more efficiently over the full distance of a trip.

That’s the core idea behind the CX-70 PHEV’s Mi-Drive EV mode: keep the vehicle running on electricity as long as the battery allows, and let the gasoline engine handle the rest.

Mi-Drive EV Mode and the CX-70 PHEV’s Electric Range

The CX-70 PHEV runs a 2.5-litre four-cylinder e-Skyactiv PHEV engine paired with an electric motor, producing a combined system output of 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel. That’s the same output across the GS-SC, GS-L SC, GT, and Signature trims.

What changes by trim is electric-only range. The new GS-SC and GS-L SC trims deliver an estimated 51 km of electric-only driving, while the GT and Signature trims offer 43 km. Combined with the gasoline engine, the SC trims reach an estimated 832 km of total range, and the GT and Signature trims reach 801 km, all from a 74 L fuel tank.

Mi-Drive’s EV mode lets the driver prioritize electric propulsion on highways and through town before the gasoline engine engages, which is exactly the pattern of a cottage run: some highway cruising, a stretch through town, then a final approach on quieter roads. Normal and Sport modes still draw on the hybrid system for efficiency even when EV mode isn’t selected.

On the GT and Signature trims, Mi-Drive adds Off-Road and Towing modes, so summer adventures away from pavement don’t come at the cost of the PHEV’s fuel-saving advantage.

Comfort and Cargo for the Long Haul

A long drive is more than range numbers. The PHEV lineup includes dual-zone automatic climate control and rear heater ducts, which keep both rows comfortable regardless of how hot the pavement gets in July.

Every PHEV trim runs a 12.3-inch Mazda Connect touchscreen, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto available wired on the GS-SC and GS-L SC trims and wireless from the GT trim up. The GS-SC trim also includes four USB-C charging ports, front and rear, so devices stay topped up for the whole drive.

Cargo space matters just as much on a cottage trip as range does. The GT trim’s cargo hold offers 1,131 L behind the rear seats, enough room for coolers, bikes, or kayaks without needing a roof box for a typical weekend load.

Who Benefits Most From the CX-70 PHEV’s Range

The CX-70 PHEV is built for New Brunswick drivers who regularly cover long distances to cottages, coastal towns, or family visits across the province, and who would rather spend that time driving than searching for a gas station.

It also suits drivers who want electric-only capability for short errands around town but still need the flexibility of a gasoline engine for the longer summer trips. The GS-SC and GS-L SC trims, with their 51 km electric range, are the strongest fit for that pattern since most short local loops can run entirely on electric power before the highway stretch calls on the gasoline engine.

Drivers who tow or head off pavement occasionally will find that fit in the GT or Signature trims, where Off-Road and Towing modes join the Mi-Drive lineup without giving up the plug-in hybrid’s fuel-stop advantage.

Plan Your Next Summer Drive with the CX-70 PHEV

The 2026 CX-70 PHEV pairs a 323 hp plug-in hybrid system with up to 51 km of electric-only range and 832 km of combined range on the SC trims, giving New Brunswick drivers a practical way to cut down on fuel stops during long summer trips.
