THE MAZDA2 2016 OFFICIALLY UNVEILED IN CANADAJan 26th , 2015
When it comes to subcompact cars, Canadian buyers have a lot of choices. Indeed, the subcompact vehicle segment is full of interesting alternatives, and now consumers have one more option with the arrival of the 2016 Mazda2.
Officially unveiled to Canadians at last week’s Montreal International Auto Show, the 2016 Mazda2 will officially debut this year. First unveiled in Japan and known as the Demio over there, the new Mazda2 is stunning both inside and out, and now offers buyers the full suite of SKYACTIV technologies designed to make the car more fun to drive, but also more fuel-efficient.
The new Mazda2 is designed under the KODO Soul of Motion philosophy like the Mazda3, the Mazda CX-5, and the Mazda6 unveiled in the last few years. The car showcases perfect proportions and a sporty overall style. With its slopping hood, curved roofline and subtle rear, the Mazda2 will be instantly recognizable and should appeal to buyers looking for a euro-inspired design.
Inside, the new Mazda2 is simply breathtaking. The dashboard and center console are modern and have a clean look that really accentuates the car’s sporty personality. Soft materials that would not be out of place on a luxury vehicle are used to build the interior. With a wheelbase that is longer that the previous model, there is now more room inside the new Mazda2, especially for passengers in the back. In the trunk, owners will benefit from a deep cargo area and seats that can be folded to improve cargo capacity.
The 2016 Mazda2 is built on the SKYACTIV chassis that is both lighter and more rigid. The body is also built using lighter materials. Under the hood, a 1.5-liter four-cylinder SKYACTIV-G engine will power the new Mazda2. We do not know yet how much power the new engine will have, but it should be among the highest in the segment. A six-speed manual transmission will be standard while a six-speed automatic transmission will be optional. Both will send power to the front wheels and should be more compact and efficient compared to previous transmissions offered on the Mazda2.
Given that SKYACTIV is designed to improve fuel economy while preserving performance, there is no reason to believe the new Mazda2 will not show a significant improvement in both compared to the previous generation. Moreover, the Mazda2 is designed for those who want to have fun driving their small car, and like other Mazda vehicles, the new Mazda2 should prove to be a hoot to drive around the city and on the highway.
