2016 Mazda3: A real looker
The 2016 Mazda3 is establishing its legacy
Despite the compact segment being full of some serious competition, the strongest of the bunch is, most definitely, the recently redesigned and reengineered Mazda3. With both a hatchback and sedan version available, the 2016 Mazda3 is a versatile, dynamic and highly efficient vehicle. While those aren’t its only redeeming qualities, they are most certainly reasons why the Mazda3 has been one of Canada’s bestselling cars for years.
One of the 2016 Mazda3’s most compelling qualities is its versatile engine and transmission set-up. There are two available SKYACTIV engines along with three SKYACTIV transmissions. As such, the Mazda3 is mastered to provide fuel economy as well as a dynamic driving experience.
There’s an available 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that produces 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque in the Mazda3 GX and GS models. Transmission choices in the GX and GS are between a SKYACTIV 6-speed manual and SKYACTIV 6-speed automatic.
If you choose to opt for the top-trim Mazda3 GT, you’ll find a 2.5L 4-cylinder lurking beneath the sculpted hood that pushes out 184 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. Better yet, the GT is available with a manual transmission since last year, as well as a SKYACTIV 6-speed automatic with i-ELOOP technology that continually recovers kinetic energy as you use the brakes. The GT also features paddle shifters for the non i-ELOOP automatic.
A modern style for the 2016 Mazda3
Fantastic engines and transmissions aside, the 2016 Mazda3 is nothing short of stunning (in both sedan and hatchback). Mazda’s KODO design flows beautifully from nose to tail on each. With its elongated nose, and close-dropped rear, the Mazda3 features a race-inspired, sporty look that gives it an athletic air, as well as some serious presence on the road.
Brand new for this third generation 2016 Mazda3 is the integration of the HMI Commander Switch. Located just below the shifter it controls the infotainment system housed on a newly designed 7” colour touchscreen that seemingly floats above the HVAC vents.
Overall, the 2016 Mazda3 is a modern, well-engineered vehicle that sits leagues away from where its sticker price would suggest. A bevy of gadgets, including satellite and HD radio, Bluetooth, as well as passive and active safety features such as available blind-spot monitoring and smart city brake also help elevate the Mazda3 into that top segment spot.
